Writing and Self-examination

Good writing requires self-examination. Why is one writing? What part of the writer will be shared with readers? Will it be only information or will it include the essence of the writer? This, then determines what will be written: poetry, essays, articles, short stories, novels, or any other genre of writing.

A writer’s work must share part of his or her being, or it is merely reporting. And when the soul or spirit of the writer is included, it requires a depth of self-examination; it requires searching the psyche for what is important and even relevant to the writer and thus, to the reader. This is egoism, not egotism; the first is self-assurance, the second is vainglory.

Athough writing for financial gain is important, it should never be the sole reason for writing, as that will not bring out the best in the writer. Passion of expression, a need to communicate, a desire to share a part of the person—ideas, feelings, passions—and love are the bases for exemplary and ageless writing.

Writing must fulfill a heartfelt need for self-expression, ego fulfillment, or a therapeutic necessity, and last, but not least, financial reward and fame.

If writing does not foster this self-examination, it is nothing more than a skill to use words, to use language, and to use writing to manipulate and not to satisfy the reader.

There are some pointers that will be helpful to you when it comes to getting creative in your article writing. By understanding these pointers, you will end up making your article writing more useful and more powerful.

The must fundamental factor that you need to master when it comes to getting creative with your article writing is your choice of words. While you do not want to utilize a “big” word when something more concise will do, you will want to use interesting words whenever possible.

Another fundamental factor that you will want to need to appreciate when working to make your article writing more creative is the manner in which you structure a particular article. Long blocks of text are far less compelling than a pithy, direct and smartly written sentence or paragraph. Don’t use five words when one will do.

Finally, when it comes to creative article writing, you will want to make the reader see and feel what you are writing about. You will want to convey a sense of emotion in your article writing. Article Writing - The 5 Most Common Mistakes Made When Trying to Write Like You Talk

Article writing requires you to write like you talk. While coaching hundreds of article writers and marketers, I’ve identified five common mistakes made when trying to write like you talk.

Let’s take a closer look at these five mistakes and what to do instead.

Mistake Number One - The first mistake that comes from not writing like you talk, I believe, is that relentless and fruitless and silly pursuit of perfection - trying to get it exactly perfect.

We talked several weeks ago about writing near-perfect articles . A near-perfect article is simply one that represents you well, gives good information, gets people to know, like and trust you, and leaves them wanting more.

So the opposite of perfectionism is a near-perfect article with good information. I would rather have my near-perfect article out there working for me 24/7 than your not-quite-yet-perfect-but-almost-
there-just-one-more-tweak article still in your computer.

Mistake Number Two - Being very formal in your writing. This is not for APA style, this is not for delivering at a major technical conference, so forget the formality. Write like you talk, chat with people.

Mistake Number Three - Writing an article like it’s a term paper, complete with footnotes and research. Research is fine, but do not put it in the footnotes.

Mistake Number Four - Writing too much. Many, many people, because they haven’t learned how to write conversationally, believe they have got to put everything they have into one article, and so they end up around 1,000 words, 1,500 words. There are a lot of errors there. One, you are giving
away the store. You do not want to give away the store in everything you do.

Now, some people out there are wondering, well, “Jeff, how can you say that, because you give away the store on every call!”

No I don’t. I give a lot of information, and I give and I give and I give, but there is so much
more behind this. If you are thinking you could be on these calls and get the same thing as in the Article Writing and Marketing Secrets Tele-Course, you are so wrong, because there is so much more behind this.

But when you deliver good information, good things come, people appreciate it. But trying
to do too much hurts you; trying to do too much in one article hurts you. You can put it into other articles, etc., etc.

Mistake Number Five - The fifth mistake is, you forget who you are talking to. You forget that you are talking to people, you forget you are talking to your ideal client, and you end up writing for some nameless, faceless committee.

I encourage you to avoid these mistakes and use these tips to write more and more articles.

Article Writing - The 3 Most Common Mistakes Made When Writing Articles

Article writing and marketing is a great way to build your business, online and offline. The really great news is that it is easy and inexpensive to get started in article writing and marketing.

While coaching article writers and marketers, I have noticed that beginning writers and even experienced writers make three common mistakes.

Mistake #1 - Giving away the store - Many writers falsely believe they have to put everything they know about their subject into just one article. This is called “giving away the store.” Don’t do this! One article is not the place to do a “brain dump” on all that you know about a topic. A good article is simply a slice of your expertise - it is not intended to be the entire meal.

Mistake #2 - Using jargon and technical words - Some writers believe the way to demonstrate their expertise is to use technical and jargon words. These words do not impress the reader. In fact, jargon puts them off. Write like you talk - and if you talk in jargon-ese, change the way you talk!

Mistake #3 - Perfectionism - Many people try to write perfect articles. I would much rather have my near perfect article out there working for me 24/7, than someone else’s not yet quite perfect article sitting in their computer. A near perfect has four important characteristics:

1 - It’s good enough to represent you well professionally.

2 - It provides great information.

3 - It helps the reader to know, like and trust you.

4 - It leads the reader to want to know more.

Avoid these mistakes and use these tips when writing your articles.
